After college, Blaine moved to New York City to work in the luxury travel industry. When the Covid pandemic hit, she suddenly found herself unemployed. She found herself having to figure out the “What next?” question.
Blaine had always loved giving dating advice and she’d helped many of her male friends with their dating app profiles. When you create a profile, you’re competing against hundreds of other profiles that look similar. She helped them figure out how to stand out and differentiate themselves. Then it hit her: Why not create a course to reach more people?
Blaine compiled her knowledge to sell a course and found her first customers on dating apps. She told people to match with her if they wanted a free guide on how to improve their dating life during the pandemic. It’s how she tested proof of concept—and realized it would work.
How to take your passion and generate revenue
While you do have to take a first step and dive in, Blaine emphasizes that you need to make sure that you’re making and selling something that people want. Course creators get it wrong all the time. They spend time, money, and effort recording and building a course they wanted without an audience to buy it.
Blaine recommends selling a course first and hosting it live four to five times. You can answer questions as they arise. Once you have a better understanding of your ideal customer and what they want, you can take the time to record the course. Blaine taught her course 10 times live before she recorded it. Blaine now has an evergreen course that her audience wants to buy.
Blaine’s videos on social media have taken off. She believes they’re popular because they give short, actionable tips. They’re easy to save and put into action, i.e. “If a girl says this, text her this.” Her audience continues to come back for more.
The internet and short-form content gives you the ability to access anyone in the world. Even if 0.001% of the world’s population is fascinated by it, that’s thousands of people you have access to. Don’t be afraid to leverage it.
Blaine’s journey on Shark Tank
We’ve had a couple of previous guests who’ve been on Shark Tank. Blaine reiterated that the sharks really don’t know about your business before you walk into the room. You do walk out and pitch your business. She was in the “tank” for about 35 minutes.
It was a great once-in-a-lifetime experience that she also found incredibly anxiety-inducing. But everyone she interacted with—from the makeup artists to the producers—was kind to her.
She landed a deal with Mark Cuban, though it hasn’t officially closed. It’s a long process and they’re nearing the finish line. Mark’s team has been a pleasure to work with. Blaine shared that despite a deal not being officially closed, Mark is generous with his time and quick to respond to questions and concerns.
