How Lauren launched her career
Lauren got her start as an online entrepreneur 18 years ago by starting a website to teach others how to reduce their debt and meal plan. She started getting a lot of media attention, which she capitalized on strategically.
She wrote three best-selling books, became a national TV personality, and was a regular on the Today Show for 10 years and the Rachael Ray Show for six years. She helped millions of Americans get out of debt.
Lauren is passionate about writing books, producing shows, and building businesses. She also saw that most PR agencies were old-school and didn’t understand television. She wanted to help coach people on how to get a book out into the world, book speaking engagements, build courses, and leverage their businesses.
So she launched Leverage with Media PR to teach people what she’s been doing for the last 15 years.
But how did Lauren become a regular on Rachael Ray and other TV shows? Listen to hear her ingenious strategy.
Why a book is the new business card
Most people who want to write a book have a message that they want to get out. They want to be seen as an expert. But it’s hard to just say you’re an expert. When you put your expertise in book form, you can brand yourself however you want. It solidifies you as the market leader in your industry. And as you do media and PR, you brand yourself as that expert. Your book is a segue to more opportunities. But where do you start?
Lauren’s advice for someone writing a book
A lot of people say “I have a book in me.” But the question you have to answer is why you’d want to write a book. Your “why” has to line up with your business goals so that it remains evergreen for at least 5–10 years.
Don’t be afraid to leverage AI. Lauren uses it to help her generate ideas. She’ll write out what’s in her head and ask for 10 bullet points with title topics. Lastly, Lauren also recommends working with a coach. If someone can help you demystify the writing, formatting, sales, etc. it’s beneficial. It makes it easier for you to get out there and do it.
How to get your message out into the media
You can get national media attention before you get a traditional book deal if you have large enough email lists and social media followings. There’s a good chance you can get a traditional book deal with a large advance. Lauren’s strategy was to do national TV to get information for her marketing plan to send with her book proposals to major publishing companies.
Why is that important? Because large publishers want to know how you’re going to market your book. Lauren had already been on the TODAY Show and other national TV shows. Because of that strategy, she got a large book deal and leveraged her media appearances to make her book a bestseller.
Lauren is a huge believer in the StoryBrand method. You need to have a story. You can’t just say “I’m a health and wellness coach and I’m going to talk about this.” TV viewers want to hear your why. You have to be in-depth with your own branding and story of how something helped you. Why are you the expert?
What else should you do to garner media attention? Listen to hear Lauren’s thoughts!
