Learn all about Shukri Wrights and his love for sports
Shukri was born and raised in NYC in an era when the Yankees were the Kings of the city. In the late 90s, they expected the Yankees to be in the World Series every year. Shukri fell in love with listening to them on the radio. Baseball was his first love.
He branched out and started gaining interest in other sports. When Shukri watched hockey in high school, he got to watch out-of-market Bruins games. He was impressed that a man as large as Zdeno Chára could play hockey. The Bruins captured his heart.
Why he launched “The Shukri Wrights Podcast”
It was March 2020 and the NBA suspended its season indefinitely because of the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. On March 12th, He did a two-hour radio show sharing announcements about the NBA, MLB, and upcoming NFL season.
Shortly after, he got an email from his program director saying that they were shutting down the station indefinitely. His last day was March 13th and he had no idea what he’d do next.
Someone suggested he start a podcast, so he did. He invited notable people in sports media, broadcasting, and sports and had conversations with them about their careers. He slowly built a platform. The podcast allowed him to share his thoughts about what was happening in the world.
Shukri’s life demonstrates the power of taking risks
Shukri firmly believes that you have to take risks in life to achieve anything. Buying a house, starting a family, launching a business—it’s all risky. But those things are also incredibly rewarding. The truth is that there’s no such thing as a risk-free life.
Shukri’s entire career has been a series of taking risks to chase after his dream. 10 years ago, if you told Shukri that he’d be moving to Boston to make a name for himself, he would’ve laughed. So how did he land there?
When Shukri was in college, his dad told him, “If you want to get started in sports media, you’re gonna have to leave New York.” Why? Because he didn’t have the experience necessary to launch a career in New York.
After he graduated with his undergraduate degree, Shukri went to Boston for the first time. The city, the people, and the personality captured his heart. When his best friend recommended that he move to Boston, something clicked. He knew that’s where he wanted to be.
He spent four and a half months working 12+ hour days seven days a week to make his dream happen. One month later, he got a call from WGBH for a job opportunity in Boston. But when he moved to Boston, it still took over two years to get into radio.
He knew what he wanted but couldn’t figure out how to move forward. He firmly believes that you meet every person in your life for a reason. If you are serious about what you want to do, you have to connect with people who are doing what you want to do. That ultimately led him to WMFO (91.5 FM) and starting his own radio show in July of 2019.
Shukri is a great example of someone who took his passion, strived relentlessly to reach his goal, and didn’t give up until he did.
