Jonny’s advice for student-athletes interested in professional hockey

Jonny’s biggest piece of advice? Don’t be lazy. When you have free time after practice, take advantage of what’s around you. Jonny was part of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee so he could meet people outside of hockey. That led to an internship with the Erie Otters where he learned a lot about working in the game of hockey (outside of playing).

He also emphasizes that you need to be able to set yourself up for life after college. You never know what can come from networking and a simple conversation. After the draft in Nashville, Jonny ran into Aaron Cooney, the manager of the media department for the Otters. Aaron gave him an internship and allowed him to do a talk show with the Otters, giving him experience interviewing hockey players.

Ultimately, he points out that it’s not about who you know but it’s about who knows you. Find a way to build relationships because you never know where they’ll lead. Make sure you’re making an impression on people. It’s how Jonny got a job at Bleacher Report. Someone called Fresh Tape Media asking for up-and-coming hockey personalities and they gave Bleacher Report Jonny’s name.

What hockey has taught Jonny that he carries with him today

There are many times that a coach will tell you that you aren’t good enough and you’ll get cut from a team. That’s just how it is. You have to prove yourself. The only way you fail is to stop.

When Jonny was living in Texas, he was ready to quit hockey. His friends were having the time of their lives and he was on the rink all day, every day. It challenged him to see what he was made of. You have to persevere and understand that the lows are never as low as they seem and the highs are never as high as they seem. It’s all about your mindset. Good thoughts make good things happen.

What Jonny wishes young hockey players knew about the journey

Every athlete needs to have something that takes their mind off the game. Jonny points out that everyone’s journey is different. There’s a lot of pressure for kids to be on the ice all the time. Jonny didn’t touch his skates until he was 16.

Jonny knows many amazing players who got so burned out that they never played again. Jonny wasn’t always surrounded by hockey, and no child should be. Jonny would encourage young players to spend time with their friends on and off the ice.

Listen to the whole episode to hear about Jonny’s experience working with the NHL and what it was like to party with the Vegas Knights after they won the Stanley Cup.
