Why is mindset so important?
Mindset is your foundation. When you are clear on who you want to be and how you want to show up, everything else flows from that.
Most people do it backward and prioritize achieving results. But what do you sacrifice if you don’t prioritize who you are? Will your values fall by the wayside?
You’re less likely to achieve the results you want. The right mindset will help you achieve your goals. More importantly, you enjoy the journey far more.
But how do you assess your mental game? How do you build on your mindset foundation?
- Assess yourself: Where are your strengths? What can you work on and grow in? What are your priorities?
- Personalize the concepts and strategies: They may employ personal scorecards, an alter ego “reset,” and mental prep exercises, etc. It’s about finding the strategies that work for you. It has to be practical and personalized.
- Keep refining and upgrading: You can’t just focus on your mindset for a couple of months. We must constantly reflect, learn and grow.

What is the “Overthinking Paradox?”
Sometimes we dive into overthinking, go down a rabbit hole, and can’t get out. That’s the overthinking paradox. It’s a focus on perfection.
But there isn’t always an intellectual problem to be solved. Sometimes there’s no “right” decision. you have to do what you feel is best. It’s intuition-based. It’s trusting how you feel and using that to make a decision.
One of the best ways to minimize overthinking is to think more beforehand. The more you mentally rehearse how something could go, you’re more likely to overthink in the moment.
Overthinking is your mind trying to plan on the spot. It doesn’t do a good job. Planning before consciously means you’ll think less during key moments and trust your instincts.
How else can you stop obsessing over results?
There’s nothing wrong with setting goals and being results-driven. If it’s your primary focus, you may sacrifice your values. You won’t enjoy the journey. It’ll likely work against you in the long run.
You have to prioritize how you’re showing up and who you’re being in the process. How do you stop sacrificing the process? Care about the process for the sake of itself. Care about who you are when you show up. You need to connect your extrinsic goals to your intrinsic motivations.
Your priority should always be improving who you are today versus who you were yesterday. Are you getting better at your mindset? What is your personal definition of success? What is your personal scorecard? How will you define success for yourself, intrinsically? Without that, you lose sight of who you want to be.
Leverage breathwork to manage your mental state
One of Dr. Cassidy’s core strategies is a reset routine. It starts with acceptance. You have to see things for what they are. You need to be in a calm mental state. To calm your mind, you have to calm your body. You can do that through breathwork. You need to find something that works for you. Use breathing to get centered and grounded and be present. You have to commit to who you want to be and how you want to move forward. Breathing can help you bridge the gap from acceptance of where you are to committing to where you want to be.
